Vitanova – which means NEW LIFE – was established to alleviate the enormous need for donated tissue in South Africa. As a tissue bank, Vitanova is dedicated to increasing the awareness of tissue donation and the number of registered tissue – and organ donors, through public education.

Through cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art facility in the Western Cape and local and international tissue-engineering expertise, Vitanova impacts the lives of patients requiring tissue transplantation and implantation, daily.

What Is Tissue Donation?

Tissue donation is a generous, voluntary gift bestowed after death. Considering that 85% of people who die can help others through tissue donation, and that one tissue donor can save or improve the lives of 65 people, tissue donation can provide a lot of comfort during a devastating time.

Femoral Head Donation

Did you know that as a hip replacement patient you can donate your femoral head – the bone removed during your surgery – to help others? Now you do!

This relatively small piece of bone – normally discarded by the hospital – can be used to treat bone cancer, repair bone defects during surgery or be turned into bone products. By donating it, you can make a world of difference in the life of someone else.
